The track
Cartridge Overdrive starts as a Nintendo game and ends as a techno record. The chip side is built the way the NES sound chip works: two pulse-wave channels, a triangle wave for the bass, a noise channel for drums, and chords played as a very fast arpeggio because the chip could only sound one note per channel. The modern side is a Roland 909 kit, a rumble reverb under the kick and a saturated rolling bass.
The two worlds meet in the power-up section, where the 909 kick enters sounding like a 4-bit sample and a bitcrusher opens it up to a clean, full kick over eight bars. The hook stays on the square-wave lead throughout; in the drop a supersaw doubles it an octave down for weight. The chords repeat every eight bars, E minor, C, D and a B major that gives the tune its boss-battle tension. Coin, power-up, 1-up and game-over jingles mark the sections.
| Time | Section | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 0:01 | Intro | Pure NES. A square-wave lead plays the hook over a 1/32-note arpeggio, a triangle bass in octaves and a noise drum kit, with coin sounds at the ends of phrases. |
| 0:16 | Power-up | A 909 kick arrives as if played by a 4-bit cartridge, crushed and downsampled, and a bitcrusher opens it to a clean modern kick over eight bars. A riser climbs, the modern bass starts on the offbeats, and a power-up jingle runs into the groove. |
| 0:31 | Groove | Full techno: 909 kick with a rumble reverb, clap and sixteenth hats, a rolling bass ducked under the kick. The second pulse channel plays offbeat chord stabs and the arpeggio pumps behind them. |
| 1:00 | Main | A 1-up jingle, a ride cymbal, and the hook back on the square lead from bar 41 with a dotted-eighth echo. |
| 1:30 | Breakdown | The kick stops. A warm pad holds the chords while the lead plays the hook in half time and the arpeggio's pulse width sweeps. The chip drums come back for the second half. |
| 1:44 | Build | A chip snare roll speeds up from eighths to 32nds and rises in pitch. The arpeggio climbs over a B pedal and gets bitcrushed, a high-pass filter thins the whole mix out, and a last power-up lands on a silent beat. |
| 1:59 | Drop | Impact and sub drop, then the hook on the square lead doubled an octave down by a 96-oscillator supersaw, over the whole techno rig. |
| 2:29 | Outro | The techno falls away and the NES sounds finish alone: the hook, the triangle bass and the noise kit, ending on a descending game-over run. |

The NES rig (Relica 2, VST3)
Relica 2 has no preset parameter, so each sound is a state file written from a factory preset with parameter overrides.
| Track | Patch | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | Electric Square, mono with a short glide and light vibrato | Pulse channel 1: the hook |
| Harm | 25% pulse, short decay | Pulse channel 2: offbeat chord stabs in the techno sections |
| Arp | 40% pulse through the built-in arpeggiator at 1/32 | The chords as a fast arpeggio; its pulse width sweeps in the breakdown |
| Tri | Triangle, mono | Octave bass in the chip sections |
| ChipKick, ChipSnare, ChipHat | Triangle and noise | The noise-channel drum kit and the build's rising snare roll |
| SFX | Square | Coin, power-up, 1-up and game-over jingles |
The techno rig
| Track | Source | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Kick | Legend 909 kit (built-in sampler) | Four on the floor; bitcrushed at 4 bits in the power-up, opening to clean |
| Clap, Hats | Legend 909 kit (built-in sampler) | Clap on 2 and 4, sixteenth hats, ride and crashes |
| Bass | Surge XT: Bass 7 | Rolling sixteenth bass, saturated, low-passed and ducked under the kick |
| Saw | Surge XT: 96 Osc Supersaw | The hook an octave down in the drop |
| Pad | Surge XT: Warm Theme | Held chords in the breakdown |
| FX | Built-in FX | Risers, impacts, reverse swell, sub drop |
Mix and master
- Faders set from each track's measured loudness, then master rides per section so the breakdown sits about 6 dB under the drop.
- Sidechain ducking from the kick: bass 9 dB, arp 5, pad and pulse stabs 4, lead 2.
- A rumble bus: the kick through a dark reverb, saturated and ducked so it only fills the gaps.
- The beat before the drop cuts to near silence (-51 LUFS) while a master high-pass sweeps up to 650 Hz.
- Master: a gentle glue compressor (1.7:1) and a true-peak limiter at -2 dB.
- One second of silence before the song.
