The track

Cartridge Overdrive starts as a Nintendo game and ends as a techno record. The chip side is built the way the NES sound chip works: two pulse-wave channels, a triangle wave for the bass, a noise channel for drums, and chords played as a very fast arpeggio because the chip could only sound one note per channel. The modern side is a Roland 909 kit, a rumble reverb under the kick and a saturated rolling bass.

The two worlds meet in the power-up section, where the 909 kick enters sounding like a 4-bit sample and a bitcrusher opens it up to a clean, full kick over eight bars. The hook stays on the square-wave lead throughout; in the drop a supersaw doubles it an octave down for weight. The chords repeat every eight bars, E minor, C, D and a B major that gives the tune its boss-battle tension. Coin, power-up, 1-up and game-over jingles mark the sections.

TimeSectionWhat happens
0:01IntroPure NES. A square-wave lead plays the hook over a 1/32-note arpeggio, a triangle bass in octaves and a noise drum kit, with coin sounds at the ends of phrases.
0:16Power-upA 909 kick arrives as if played by a 4-bit cartridge, crushed and downsampled, and a bitcrusher opens it to a clean modern kick over eight bars. A riser climbs, the modern bass starts on the offbeats, and a power-up jingle runs into the groove.
0:31GrooveFull techno: 909 kick with a rumble reverb, clap and sixteenth hats, a rolling bass ducked under the kick. The second pulse channel plays offbeat chord stabs and the arpeggio pumps behind them.
1:00MainA 1-up jingle, a ride cymbal, and the hook back on the square lead from bar 41 with a dotted-eighth echo.
1:30BreakdownThe kick stops. A warm pad holds the chords while the lead plays the hook in half time and the arpeggio's pulse width sweeps. The chip drums come back for the second half.
1:44BuildA chip snare roll speeds up from eighths to 32nds and rises in pitch. The arpeggio climbs over a B pedal and gets bitcrushed, a high-pass filter thins the whole mix out, and a last power-up lands on a silent beat.
1:59DropImpact and sub drop, then the hook on the square lead doubled an octave down by a 96-oscillator supersaw, over the whole techno rig.
2:29OutroThe techno falls away and the NES sounds finish alone: the hook, the triangle bass and the noise kit, ending on a descending game-over run.

How an agent sees it

The picture Wavelength draws of Cartridge Overdrive: sections and bars, loudness over time, a spectrogram of the mix and every track's notes over its level.
The agent can't hear the song, so render --png draws it: sections and bars, the loudness contour, a spectrogram of the mix, and every track's notes over its level.

Mix and master

  • Faders set from each track's measured loudness, then master rides per section so the breakdown sits about 6 dB under the drop.
  • Sidechain ducking from the kick: bass 9 dB, arp 5, pad and pulse stabs 4, lead 2.
  • A rumble bus: the kick through a dark reverb, saturated and ducked so it only fills the gaps.
  • The beat before the drop cuts to near silence (-51 LUFS) while a master high-pass sweeps up to 650 Hz.
  • Master: a gentle glue compressor (1.7:1) and a true-peak limiter at -2 dB.
  • One second of silence before the song.
